Hypnotherapy for Weight Management
Slim, toned and stylish fashion models are probably the first images that come to mind upon hearing the phrase, “weight management”. However, weight management isn’t just about looking good, but also about good health.
Weight Management and the Body
Maintaining a healthy weight plays a key role in staying healthy. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in the United States has linked the following health problems to being overweight:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Sleep Apnea
- Osteoarthritis
- Fatty Liver Disease
- Kidney Disease
- Pregnancy Problems
The American Diabetes Association reported that most patients with type 2 diabetes are obese, and the global epidemic of obesity largely explains the dramatic increase in the incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes over the past 20 years.
In Singapore, increasing obesity rates in children and young adults are set to worsen already-high rates of diabetes. Diabetes rates rose from 8.6% in Singaporean adults in 1992 to 11.3% in 2010, and would have gone up to 12.9% by 2015, according to epidemiologists at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
Based on current projections, 34% of young people aged between 24 to 35 this year can expect to be diabetic by the time they are 65, says Professor Chia Kee Seng, Dean of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
A person with body weight 20% or more above the recommended weight range has roughly three times greater risk of heart attack and stroke than that of a person in the healthy weight range. This is because the chances of developing other contributory factors for cardiovascular disease is higher for people who are over-weight. Weight gain has been associated with increases in LDL (bad) cholesterol, decrease in HDL (good) cholesterol, increases the likelihood of developing high blood pressure and diabetes.
Dr Daniel Chan Boon Yeow. Medical Oncologist warned that:
“The cancers for which obesity are known to be a risk factor include common cancers like colon (large bowel) cancer, breast cancer (in post-menopausal women) and uterus (womb) cancer. In addition, obesity was found in a large scientific study to be associated with a greater likelihood of dying from cancers of the esophagus, colon, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidney. These are all among the top 10 cancers afflicting Singaporeans.
Lose that extra pound of weight and you just might reduce your risk of a weighty problem – cancer.”
Hence, the need for effective weight management programmes is increasingly becoming more urgent and critical.
Not only will a person with healthy weight have a reduced risk of the health problems, that person will also be able to perform physical tasks better, sleep better and have more energy.
Weight Management and the Mind
Apart from the obvious physical effects, weight management also has an impact on a person’s emotional well-being. Overweight persons may suffer from low self-esteem or be overly self-conscious when interacting with others. They might also be subject to criticism or ridicule and feel bad about others and themselves. They might have apprehensions when it comes to engaging in sports or similar recreational activities.
A person who is able to manage his weight properly will be able to relate to others with more confidence, stay happy all the time and therefore more likely to be more successful in life.
Hypnotherapy and Weight Management
Hypnotherapy for weight management is about educating the person’s subconscious mind about the real reasons for weight reduction and removing any subconscious hurdles that are actually preventing them from reducing their weight and keeping them within a healthy range.
Hypnotherapy keeps the person focused on healthy habits and builds their inner confidence in their physical appearance. They will eat right, exercise, and maintain their ideal weight.
There are many possible factors that can cause a person to become overweight.
A good hypnotist will make use of the most appropriate combination of different procedures to pinpoint and eliminate the probable root causes for the person’s excessive weight to help them regain their ideal weight.
Some common hypnotic procedures in a weight management programmes are:
- Hypnotic suggestions
- Posthypnotic suggestions
- Guided imageries and visualizations
- Age progression
- Metaphorical anecdotes and stories
- Self-hypnosis
- Ego-strengthening
- Age regression
- Ego State Therapy
How Effective is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is increasingly becoming accepted as a weight management tool, as shown by statistics in Positive Changes. The Journal of Clinical Psychology pointed out that hypnosis has been shown to be an effective aid in some weight loss cases.
Regularity and repetition are key to the effectivity of hypnotherapy in weight management. However, it is now possible to achieve lasting results with just four to six sessions when we use advanced hypnotic techniques with our clients.
The Med India Network for Health reported that hypnotherapy is a complementary kind of therapy. It is therefore more effective as part of a weight management programme which also includes exercise and help from a professional nutritionist.
