What comes to your mind when I say the word “Hypnosis”?
Is it
A. positive or B. negative?
A. good or B. bad?
A. fearful or B. helpful?
If your answers include any “B”, then you are likely to be influenced by movies and books.
Movies and books dramatize the “power” of hypnosis in order to improve sales. Unfortunately by doing so they inevitably created very wrong and negative impressions for hypnosis.
Hypnosis is positive, good and helpful because it is a very powerful tool when used correctly to help you improve your health, well-being and performance.
It can be dangerous when it is misunderstood and misused. Misconceptions, skepticism and the resulting fear can also prevent you from getting into the hypnotic state for permanent changes to occur.
So be very careful. If you really want to benefit from hypnosis, you need to understand the truths about hypnosis.
Below are clarifications of the 10 most common myths and misconceptions around Hypnosis.
1. Hypnosis is asleep or unconscious.
The person does not lose sense of awareness or fall asleep in hypnosis. On the contrary, the person is actually more fully awake. All levels of hypnosis are characterized by increased attention, and it’s this heightened concentration that increases your receptivity to suggestion.
2. A person doesn’t remember anything that happens while under hypnosis.
The person is aware of everything while hypnotized and afterward, unless specific amnesia is suggested for a therapeutic purpose. It’s normal for the mind to wander at times. It is likely that the memory of the session fades away, just like after a deep daydream or a nap.
3. A person can be hypnotized against their will. Once a person has been hypnotized they can no longer resist it.
No one can be forced into trance. Hypnosis is a state of consent and cooperation. The only control the hypnotist has over the hypnotized person is the control that person allows the hypnotist to have. The hypnotized person can come out of the trance on his /her own, anytime if he/she wishes to.
4. A person surrenders their will once they go into trance, and can be made to do things he or she does not want to do.
Even in a trance a person does not lose sense of awareness and is capable of making normal decisions. No one can be ‘made’ to do anything under hypnosis that the person would find objectionable under normal circumstances.
5. Not everyone can be hypnotized.
Everyone has the ability to be hypnotized. It’s a natural and normal state. We enter a state similar to hypnosis when daydreaming, meditating, driving on the road or being engrossed in a project or conversation. Everyone can be hypnotized to a sufficient depth to accomplish most therapeutic goals.
6. Only weak-minded and gullible people can be hypnotized.
Studies actually suggest that people of above average intelligence who are capable of concentrating and who have a capacity for creativity and vivid imagination is usually easier to hypnotize.
7. A person has to relax deeply to be in a state of hypnosis.
Physical relaxation does not necessarily impact the state of hypnosis; rather it is mental relaxation that is required. There are methods of hypnosis that don’t even rely on physical relaxation.
8. A person under hypnosis might reveal his or her deepest secrets.
As the person doesn’t lose sense of awareness under hypnosis, they will not reveal personal secrets unless they wish to do so.
9. A person can get stuck in a trance forever.
No one, in entire history of hypnosis, has ever been stuck in a hypnotic trance. Hypnosis is a natural state that we enter and exit all of the time
10. There is a hypnotized feeling
There is no such feeling. There is no hypnotized feeling. Most people feel very relaxed when in hypnosis. Some people feel heavy. Some people feel light. Some people have other sensations and feelings. Other people have absolutely no feeling. So every time and every person might have different the feeling.
